La Olimpia Communitarian Forest – 2003
 

 

In 2003, Casa Pueblo acquireds with through its own effort 96 acres of land and establisheds La Olimpia Forest. This initiative was funded with sales from Madre Isla Casa Puebo’s coffee brand, Madre Isla, and with a donation of the local bank donated $25,000 from a local bankdollars.

 

In this area of the island, the Grande de Arecibo River emerges andit supplies potable water to more than onea million inhabitants from Adjuntas to Arecibo; and, through the a super aqueduct, it also supplies water to the Metropolitan area. It alsoIn addition, the area maintains primary forests areas and the habitat of the Forest Eagle and the Sierra Falcon, both endangered species.

 

This communitarian initiative created the conditions for La Olimpia Forest to be recognized by law as a forest reserve in 2004. The area has been incorporated as an auxiliary forest to the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.  Tin this way, Casa Pueblo contributes to the buffer zone of La Olimpia Forest with a Private Communitarian Conservation Strategy.
