Communitarian Institute of Biodiversity and Culture (CIBC) – 2002
 

This institute was initiated inwas developing during 2002 and was born on January 11, 2003.  TheIts mission is to form develop students who are leaders and active in the defense of their natural and cultural patrimony.  The environmental educational program uses culture as the core for teaching and closely relates theory and practice.  The curriculum emphasizes on strengthening creativity and individual and collective leadership.  As a fundamental part, it facilitates student participation on natural resources defenseprotection.

 

The Institute is made possible by an agreement  collaboration with Washington Irving Elementary School in Adjuntas.  The school provides Casa Pueblo with an old 4- classroom building for the classes.  Classes are offered to students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grade as part of their academic program.  Collaboration agreements have also been signed with the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus, Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, the Smithsonian Institute and the TRIO program of the Inter- American University San German Campus.

 

In 2005, a group of professors invited from Idaho University offered a 3- credit biology course at the undergraduate level was offered by a group of professors invited from Idaho University.  The TRIO group visited for a two- month course during summer and stayed at the.  Madre Isla farm, which was used to provideprovided their housing.  The students were offered innovative experiences with outdoor laboratories like Pueblo Forest, the hydroponics system, greenhouse, and butterfly garden.

 

Most importantly, CIBC effectively involves students with the community effectively by completing water quality monitoring in 5 different stations of the Grande de Arecibo River.  Samples are analyzed in the lab for bacteria, sediments and oxygen.  This has helped detect two contamination problems, and which were subsequentlythey were denounced and corrected.  The elementary grade school students assume thea role of using knowledge and practicing itputting into practice the knowledge they’ve acquired to serve societyice the community, as guardians of their community.

 

In September 2005, Casa Pueblo inaugurated a modern auditorium in the CIBC facilities.  It is equipped with high advanced technology and capable of video conferencing so that Adjuntas’ students can rely collaborate from afar with Universityon campus professors.  This new education tool has proved to beis of great use because it hands a technique to service the educational community.educational use.
