Communitarian Management – 1996
Based onFollowing the the idea of a speech by the great Eugenio Maria de Hostos speech of not only claiming rights but also assuming duties and responsibilities, Casa Pueblo proposeds, provokes and reaches succeeded in 1996 in the position of Forestbecoming “Forest Aadministrator” b throughy an agreement of co-management with the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. This markeds a milestone in Puerto Rico’s history and has become the parting pointan inspiration for other groups to develop their own initiatives.
For Forest the administration of the Forest, Casa Pueblo installed an innovative Council of Communityarian Management constituted by aconsisting of a group of volunteers who are scientists, technicians, workers, students and the general community. As a first activity, an Indian Ceremonial Park which had been removed for mining was rescued and, with a group effort, it was relocated to in its original placelocation.
Flora and fauna inventories, reforestation and trail construction, a visitor’s center, recreational area, and outdoor amphitheatre all thrive develop harmoniously in the Forest. There are several on going investigations investigatory experiments as well as and a pavilion for permanent biodiversity monitoring was developed. Tours through the trails and sites of interest are given by young guides who are nature interpreters. The visits, volunteer work and donations are coordinated through by Casa Pueblo.
