Law for Biological Corridors of Puerto Rico – 1999 |
|
The flourishing of the communitarian community-based initiatives in forest conservation provoked the government of Puerto Rico to approve law #14, law unifying the Maricao, Susua, Toro Negro, Guilarte and Pueblo forests, on January 9, 1999. This law demands thatto the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources to identify lands between these forests and trace two biological corridors that unite them, mark buffer zones, and determine ways to conserve and acquire them.
This law was not enforced until 2004 when Casa Pueblo got convinced the Planning Board to approve their conservation plan that creates the First Biological Corridor in Puerto Rico
